The use of shot glasses dates back to around the 1940's and were commonly used for shooting Whisky, Rum or Vodka.  However, in the current day as well as drinking the traditional drinks they're also used for drinking shots of alcohol specifically made for shooting! A Tequila Slammer is another famous shot and is usually consumed by groups of drinkers who all drink the shot at the same time taken with salt and lime.  The salt is said to lessen the burn whilst the lime provides a much needed balance of flavour to this world famous drink from Mexico. The UK measure for a single shot is generally 25mL with the exception of Northern Ireland where a single measure is regularly 35mL. A double measure is usually 70mL in the UK!  If you travel outside of the UK then the measures vary significantly.  In the USA there is no standard size of a single although 44mL is converted from 1.5 US fl oz and a double 3.0 fl oz (89mL).
